Yankees’ Clarke Schmidt lands on injured list in rotation blow

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The thriving Yankees rotation has its first in-season injury.

Clarke Schmidt landed on the injured list Thursday with a right lat strain, the Yankees announced Thursday before finishing a series against the Angels.

Cody Morris was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Schmidt had last pitched on Sunday against the Padres, when he threw five innings of two-run ball (one run earned), and he was in line to pitch again Saturday against the Giants, which will no longer happen.

After Sunday’s outing, Schmidt had described it as a grind of an outing.

“I just felt physically a little — one of those outings where you don’t feel like your best,” Schmidt said on Sunday.

Schmidt had posted a 2.52 ERA through his first 11 starts as he continued to develop and mature as a full-time starter.

He stayed healthy last season while piling up a career-high 159 innings, smashing his previous mark.

The Yankees have been without ace Gerrit Cole since spring training because of nerve inflammation in his right elbow, but their rotation had still been a strength with Luis Gil filling in incredibly for him.

Now, the Yankees will have to fill another void, with Cole not expected back until at least the end of June.
