The Witcher writers ‘actively disliked’ the books as Netflix show cancelled | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

The Witcher will be cancelled after season five after an ex-writer previously admitted that the Netflix show’s creators “actively disliked” the novels it’s based on.

Geralt of Rivia star Henry Cavill shared he would be stepping down from The Witcher in 2022 but that the series would go on with Hunger Games’ Liam Hemsworth in his place.

Subscribers knew that season four had already been given a green light with the streamer sharing a video of a table read, confirming that work had started on the new episodes.

However, this update was tainted by the reveal that there would be just one more series to follow, stating: “It’s official, The Witcher season four is in production.

“But that’s not all, we’re already planning season 5, which will be the final season and bring this epic show to a fitting conclusion. See you on The Continent.”

While some are disappointed to see the series come to an end, many are not surprised given Cavill’s departure and previous comments made about its production.

It was around the time of Cavill’s exit that former writer on The Witcher Beau Demayo opened up on his co-workers’ attitude towards the book series by author Andrzej Sapkowski.

When asked by The Direct about the recruitment process for his other project X-Men ‘97, Demayo explained: “My general rule was you had to be a fan. No questions.

“I’ve been on shows – namely Witcher – where some of the writers were not or actively disliked the books and games (even actively mocking the source material.)”

“It’s a recipe for disaster and bad morale. Fandom as a litmus test checks egos, and makes all the long nights worth it.

“You have to respect the work before you’re allowed to add to its legacy.”

When the Superman actor Cavill shared he would be leaving his time as Geralt behind, he told the Philippine Star that one of the reasons was down to a disagreement with its creators.

He stated that they were unable to find a “balance between the showrunners’ vision and my love for the books”.

But for now at least, there is still much to look forward to with The Witcher season four now in production.

The cast and crew are in the early days of bringing the show to life with Hemsworth now stepping into Cavill’s shoes as Geralt.

Season four is expected to come out in the summer of 2025 with filming for this series and the fifth outing to take place back-to-back.

The Witcher is available to watch on Netflix.
