Poldark’s Aidan Turner set to land main role as troubled detective in Bergerac return | Celebrity News | Showbiz & TV

Poldark star Aidan Turner has been tipped to star in a rebooted version of Bergerac as the hit show is reportedly set to return to British television screens.

The crime drama series revolved around fictional detective Jim Bergerac (played by John Nettles) who starts off as a police officer in Jersey before becoming a private investigator.

The original series ran for a decade, from October 1981 to December 1991 and lasted for nine series on BBC One. According to the Telegraph, the island country of Jersey, which was the backdrop for the show, is attempting to revive the hit series.

Parliamentarians on the Channel Island are locked in a debate about whether to approve a massive public funding amount of £1.8 million for the reboot series.

The island’s chief minister, Deputy Lyndon Farnham confirmed the proposal during a States Assembly session, which is set to be discussed at some point this week.

Original star John, 80, who went on to star in Midsomer Murders, is reportedly set to return in a cameo appearance, but not as the main lead.

Instead, the rumoured names that are doing the rounds are Aidan, David Tennant or Happy Valley star James Norton.

A source told the Daily Mail: “Those involved are in the final stages of contracts. But it’s almost a done deal.”

Jersey’s former Chief Minister, Deputy Kristina Moore has admitted that the reboot would be a “great boost for the island” after the initial series boosted tourism for the island.

She expressed: “The company are ready to go, there are scripts written, they could start filming in the spring for broadcast in November and December of this year.”

Express.co.uk has approached Aidan’s representative for comment.

As well as the nine series of Bergerac, the show also aired six Christmas specials each year on the BBC, before ending its run with its final festive special in 1991. Aside from John, it also starred actors Terence Alexander, Sean Arnold, Cecile Paoli and Deborah Grant in lead roles.

There have been several attempts to revive the hit show over the years but it looks like die-hard fans may finally get to see their favourite show revived again.
