Michael Caine uses walking frame alongside wife a year on from surgery | Celebrity News | Showbiz & TV

Sir Michael Caine was supported by a walking stick before he was pictured sitting on a frame at his film premiere.

The 90-year-old actor joined the cast of The Great Escaper at the BFI in London on Tuesday night.

The film, which is directed by Oliver Parker, is based on the true-life story of a British World War II veteran who ‘broke out’ of his nursing home to attend the 70th anniversary D-Day commemorations in France, in June 2014.

Sir Michael looked to be in good spirits as he posed for a number of photos as he stepped out with his wife Shakira Caine.

In several photos taken on his big night, the on-screen star held onto Oliver’s arm as he posed for pictures while holding a walking stick.

Other snaps showed Michael sitting in his frame as he posed for pictures on the red carpet alongside fellow cast members including Will Fletcher, Danielle Vitalis and Sir John Standing.

The Italian job actor opted for a smart casual look as he donned a light blue shirt, paired with a navy suit jacket and black trousers.

The legendary star was also accompanied by his two daughters, Dominique, 67, whom he shared with his first wife Patricia Haines, and Natasha, 50, whom he welcomed with his second wife, Shakira.

His rare appearance comes after the actor had back surgery last year.

His wife Shakira, 76, told the Daily Mail in March 2022: “He had a back operation quite recently. He had spinal stenosis.”

Spinal stenosis is a condition that narrows the spinal canal and can cause back and leg pain. Surgery is usually recommended only when non-surgical treatments have not been effective.

The Academy Award-winning actor has been using a walking stick in public since 2018 after a nasty fall on ice left him with a broken ankle.
