One day after running back Breece Hall vented his frustrations with his workload in the Jets’ 30-10 loss to the Cowboys at AT&T Stadium on Sunday afternoon, Saleh shared the same sentiment.
“Shoot, I’m frustrated, but I don’t think it was intentional,” the Jets’ head coach said on a Zoom call on Monday.
Hall had just four carries, tied with teammate Dalvin Cook, for 9 yards in Sunday’s loss.
The Jets only had 16 total rushes, and quarterback Zach Wilson had the most carries with five.
“I only got four touches. That’s why we struggled,” Hall said after the game. “But it is what it is.”
Saleh pointed to his defense’s inability to get off the field as the primary reason for the lack of carries, as well as falling behind early.
The Cowboys converted 9 of 18 third downs and had the ball for 42 minutes, 15 seconds compared to the Jets’ 17:45.
In total, Dallas had 83 offensive plays to the Jets’ 46.
On their first two drives, the Jets actually ran the ball five times in their first 12 plays, with Hall getting two of those carries, before quickly trailing 10-0.
“We didn’t get him the ball because they weren’t on the field, he was on the bench,” Saleh said. “It’s hard to give the guy the ball when he’s on the bench and he’s on the bench because we couldn’t get off the field on defense. That’s the frustrating part and by the time we were able to start winning some third-down reps … the game was over, the game is out of whack, we were trying to throw to catch back up.”
The Jets won’t know if they’ll have kicker Greg Zuerlein available until Friday, Saleh said. Zuerlein missed Sunday’s loss after suffering a groin injury in practice on Thursday.
They signed veteran Austin Seibert as a fill-in. He made a 34-yard field goal and extra point in the loss.
Safety Tony Adams and linebacker Quincy Williams are both still being evaluated for hamstring and knee injuries, respectively, though Saleh did not appear concerned about either.
Star receiver Garrett Wilson, who exited Sunday’s loss after getting the wind knocked out of him, is cleared.
Center Connor McGovern claimed the Cowboys, who gave the Jets’ offensive line fits, figured out the silent count they used in front of a raucous Dallas crowd.
“I don’t know how, but they seemed to have a pretty good beat on our silent cadence,” McGovern said. “Cadence wasn’t our friend like it has been. … We have some kinks to work out there.”
