Inside Europe’s most bizarre block of flats that looks just like popular Netflix show | World | News

A mind-bending apartment complex from the 1970s bears a stunning resemblance with the set of a newly-launched real-life Netflix game show.

La Muralla Roja, which translates to the Red Wall, offers a staggered silhouette like no other as it looks over the beautiful Calpe Bay in Spain.

Located in Manzanera, a coastal town in the south-eastern Spanish province of Valencia, the fortress-like complex is composed of 50 apartments, the external walls, stairs and doors of which are painted in various shades of red, pink, blue and violet.

The insane-looking building comes from the bright mind of Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill, who started creating the complex for Palomar S.A. in 1968.

Completed in 1973, this complex calls back memories of the casbahs, North African citadels.

Inside the complex, a series of geometric staircases lead residents to their doors, terraces or other amenities.

The Muralla Roja, the bright colours of which stand out against the seaside panorama, is still in use and offers buyers and renters three different styles of apartments – studio, two-bedroom and three-bedroom – ranging from 60 square metres to 120 square metres.

The building also offers several facilities, including commercial stores, a restaurant, solariums and a swimming pool open only to those living in the Muralla Roja.

The peculiar nature of this building, and the attractive holiday location in which it was placed, makes it an appealing destination for tourists.

Some of the homes can at times be found available for short-stays on holiday rental websites.

Inside, some of the apartments offer rattan furniture, cream curtains and an array of artworks on the walls.

La Muralla Roja likely served as inspiration for the creators of the set of Squid Game: The Challenge, the new Netflix‘s real-life game which took a leaf out of the homonymous South Korean TV series.

In the programme launched on November 22 by the streaming service, contestants are transported by masked guards up narrow and geometrical staircases to face their next, dangerous challenge.

While this real-life take on Squid Game was likely inspired by the Muralla Roja, the intro of another TV programme – German TV Show “Wer stiehlt mir die Show? (Who is Stealing the Show from me?) – was filmed in this apartment building.
