When Amy Winehouse’s ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil ran errands in Leeds in early February he probably didn’t expect it to make the news. However, this happened to be the first time he had been seen in public since the filming of the biopic about the late singer, who would have turned 40 today, began.
After images of Jack O’Connell on set playing Fielder emerged, it reignited public interest in the man whose name she had tattooed on her chest.
The couple eloped to Miami Beach in Florida in 2007, a month after announcing their surprise engagement, but were divorced by 2009.
Although they had been apart two years, and Blake was in jail for burglary and possession of a firearm at the time of Amy’s death at the age of just 27, his name remains synonymous with the late singer.
While Amy and Blake were together he was a regular at awards ceremonies and festivals but his profile has been considerably low since she died, so much so that other than this recent appearance little is known about what he has been up to.
Prior to this appearance the last time he had been photographed in public was November last year when he attended the inquest of his younger brother who, it was ruled, died of a heroin overdose after he fled from a secure hospital and collapsed in a hotel.
It is known that he is a father-of-two children Jack and Lola with his ex-wife Sarah Aspin. He doesn’t speak about his children but he reportedly has their names tatooed on his body. He also still has Amy;s name tatooed behind his ear.
When his son was just 15 months old in 2012 Blake was rushed to hospital and left fighting for his life after an apparent drink and drug binge. At the time Amy’s father Mitch took to Twitter writing: “Remember Amy loved him. Let’s pray for his recovery.”
He was put into an induced coma in hospital in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire but eventually pulled through. At the time Sarah told The Sun: “I’m praying he’ll survive, but I’m having to prepare myself that he may never wake up.”
Eleven years on from that incident he is believed to have a new partner, Bay Wright, with whom he was photographed in 2021. That same year it was also reported that the couple were engaged. His recent sighting also seems to confirm reports that he is currently living in Leeds.

In 2018 he appeared on Good Morning Britain talking to Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid about how he disagreed with Amy’s father Mitch’s plans for a hologram tour.
Naturally the conversation came back around to the couple’s relationship, and he was quick to clarify that it wasn’t fuelled by drugs.
“In the six or something years Amy and I were on off together, tempestuous, if you want to call it that. We had one break for a while, one argument that was in the press.
“The drug thing is something that has been attributed to me for years. The fact, me and Amy only used drugs together for six months of our marriage. That was it. Before that Amy didn’t use drugs, she smoked cannabis, I did heroin maybe four or five times…”
While Blake has given the occasional interview he seems to prefer a life out of the spotlight these days. Whether that will change with the release of the new movie remains to be seen.
