Giants open as NFL season’s biggest underdogs vs. Bills in Week 6

It doesn’t get much lower than this.

The Giants, who came into the season with playoff aspirations, opened as 15-point road underdogs against the Bills on Caesars Sportsboook, making them the biggest underdogs of the short NFL season.

A factor in this spread is Daniel Jones’ status, as it’s not known yet if he will play in primetime Sunday after leaving Sunday’s 31-16 loss to the Dolphins with a neck injury.

Head coach Brian Daboll gave a promising update Monday on his quarterback, saying he felt “optimistic” about Jones’ chances of returning for their Week 6 matchup.

It does seem there was some buyback by the gambling community with this update, as the Giants dropped back down to 14-point underdogs in Buffalo.

Jones suffered a season-ending neck injury in 2021, giving everyone pause about the extent of this injury behind a putrid offensive line.

Being a huge underdog is now becoming a common theme for the Giants.

The next-highest spread in the NFL featured these same Giants as 13-point underdogs to the Dolphins. While the Giants kept it close a bit, they didn’t have the firepower to keep up.

Without Saquon Barkley in Week 3, the Giants received 10.5 points on the road against the 49ers. The Giants lost, 30-12.

Big Blue is the only 0-5 team against the spread in the NFL.

The Giants were also 17-point underdogs against the Eagles to the end the 2022 regular season, a number they covered when they lost, 22-16.

Jones only being worth a point against the spread would seem to tell you all you need to know about how Vegas views the Giants signal caller.

We have seen many other quarterbacks be surprisingly declared inactive in the moments leading up to the game and the spreads changing dramatically.

USA Today projected that Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was worth 7.5 points to the spread, while Aaron Rodgers was worth 5.5 points.

It seems that Jones is worth even less than originally thought, as Jones was expected to have a 2.75-point influence to the spread.

But it is unknown whether he will actually play, so you haven’t heard the last of this in the 2023-24 season.

Daboll added that Barkley is closer to returning than left tackle Andrew Thomas, which would at least give the dreadful Giants’ offense another weapon.
