Fan dies after Gillette Stadium ‘event’ during Patriots game


Authorities in Massachusetts are investigating the death of a man following an incident in the stands at Gillette Stadium on Sunday during the New England Patriots-Miami Dolphins game.

The Norfolk District Attorney’s Office identified the deceased as 53-year-old Dale Mooney from Newmarket, N.H., according to Yahoo Sports and Fox 25 Boston.

Mooney had an “apparent medical event” during the fourth quarter shortly before 11 p.m., according to NBC 10 Boston.

He was treated on the scene by EMTs and rushed to a nearby hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly before midnight.

Foxborough Police initially responded to the emergency, but Massachusetts State Police are running point, per NBC 10 Boston.

In a statement from the district attorney, “There are no charges in place at this time.”

The district attorney’s office also noted the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is not expected to perform an autopsy, per Yahoo Sports and Fox 25 Boston.

The Patriots-Dolphins game ended shortly before 11:30 p.m.

New England dropped to 0-2 on the season, falling to Miami, 24-17.

The Patriots also lost their season opener in Week 1, a 25-20 home defeat at the hands of the defending NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles.
