Elton John gets EGOT status with Emmy win but missing after serious operation | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

The rock star’s farewell special, Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium, won the award for Outstanding Live Variety Special at the ceremony on Monday.
However, Elton John couldn’t make the biggest night on television due to a knee injury and resulting surgery.

The singer’s team and his husband David Furnish accepted the award for him – meaning he now has an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.

The Bennie and the Jets singer was hospitalized in August 2023 following “a slip” at his home in France, but this is a new injury.

Whispers of Elton John gaining EGOT status started when the 2023 Emmy nominations revealed his special received a nod.

Farewell From Dodger Stadium showcases John’s final North American show as part of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour.

The tour, heavily publicized as his last, kicked off in 2018 and was initially set to end in 2021, but was postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic and his injury.

“It’s an honor for my Special to be recognized by the Academy,” John said in a statement to EW following his nomination.

He continued: “My final Dodger Stadium performance was bittersweet and an evening that I will never forget. My team at Rocket Entertainment, the talented Fulwell 73, and everyone at Disney+ went above and beyond to create a magical production, not only for me as I said goodbye to North America, but for my fans all over the world to enjoy for years to come.”

John has been on the road to EGOT status — someone who has won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award — for a long time.

He won his first of five Grammy Awards in 1987 with That’s What Friends Are For, followed by his first Oscar for Best Original Song for Can You Feel the Love Tonight in 1994.

In 2000, he earned the Tony Award for his Aida score.
