Coronation Street horror as Simon Barlow involved in drink driving crash | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Since Peter Barlow (played by Chris Gascoyne) left Weatherfield, Coronation Street fans have seen his son Simon Barlow (Alex Bain) struggle to cope. Over the past few weeks, fans have seen him turn to alcohol instead of dealing with his issues.

Official spoilers for the ITV soap reveal that his drinking habits will have terrifying consequences as he’s involved in a drink driving incident. In scenes set to air next week, he wakes up on the sofa from a night on the booze with a banging headache.

Trying to clear away the mess, Bobby Donovan (Jack Carroll) gets rid of the empty bottles and cans. Although instead of helping, Simon surreptitiously takes a swig of vodka.

Back at home, Nick Tilsley (Ben Price) asks Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor) for some help shopping. Knowing that Sam Blakeman (Jude Riordan) has a chess competition, he asks Simon to drive him.

However, after a night of drinking and a swig of booze in the morning, Simon loses control of the car on a bend and crashes into a road sign. Panicking, he tells Sam to get out of the car and run.

Later on, Simon confesses to Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) that he pranged her car.

However, when she insists they report it to the police, he quickly refuses and is forced to admit he was driving over the drinking limit.

Leanne is horrified by his confession as her stepson was in the car when the crash happened, knowing they could have both been hurt.

For a few weeks now, fans of the ITV soap have questioned whether or not Simon would go down the same troubled path as his dad.

@Ockeghem1497 said: “No joking, I’m finding this Simon alcoholism story genuinely depressing.”

@DionPetrie added: “Are they turning Simon into Peter with the drink.” @Winis_World commented: “Simon has a drink problem.”

@Felstedboy tweeted: “#corrie Simon is going to end up an alcoholic at this rate.”

@sue_simmonds shared: “Oh I can’t take a permanently drunk Simon. I’ll have to stop watching if you do that.”

With @FillsWhales adding: “Simon’s his father’s son.”

Simon’s alcohol storyline comes following news that soap star Alex Bain is leaving the role on the show after 17 years.

Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV from 8pm.
