BBC’s Big Night of Musicals ‘missed the mark’ as viewers slam stars ‘miming’ | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Jason Manford hosted the celebration of musical theatre which aired on BBC One on Saturday night. With timeless classics from Disney’s Aladdin to The Phantom of the Opera viewers were in for a treat but some were admittedly disappointed.

Despite a spectacular evening, some viewers slammed the BBC for not having former Pussycat Doll and trained singer Nicole Scherzinger perform at the event which aims to shine a light on the magic of musical theatre and the difference it makes to communities.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, viewers shared their collective disappointment after the West End star took to the stage and chatted with host Jason.

@grannyweathewax wrote: “#BigNightOfMusicals missed a trick not getting Nicole Scherzinger singing from the brilliant musical Sunset Boulevard. That is quite a magical show!”

@Jon commented: “The BBC missed the mark there.”

@MikeJBurgess said: “That Scherzy clearly didn’t want to sing, or the BBC budget didn’t stretch far enough. It was a long way to go for a short chat with Manford. Nicole SherzNOTsinger, more like.#BigNightOfMusicals.”

@ATDazzles remarked: “How do you get Nicole Scherzinger to appear and not get her to sing? #BigNightOfMusicals”

@joshharsant tweeted: “So, Nicole Scherzinger just comes on for a chat, and leaves? #BigNightOfMusicals.”

@JoBullen1 said: “Nicole Scherzinger isn’t there to sing then?! #BigNightOfMusicals.”

@lea_mcc_uk… “they invited @NicoleScherzy to #BigNightOfMusicals and they didn’t have her belt out Memories or Don’t cry for me Argentina … that’s a bit bonkers!”

Her appearance comes as Nicole’s former Pussycat Doll bandmate Melody Thornton performed a showstopping rendition of I Will Always Love You on the same show last year.

Meanwhile, viewers took to social media and accused some of the performers of lipsyncing.

@see75 quizzed: “Were they miming or was it just me? #BigNightOfMusicals.”

@travelred wrote: “This isn’t 1980s Top of the Pops. Professional theatre performers don’t mime.#BigNightOfMusicals”

@lukenineone remarked: “If you’re talking about phantom, it’s widely known that some parts of the show are pre-recorded.”

Others praised the musical show as a massive hit with even Strictly star Layton Williams making an appearance.

The actor tweeted: “Was really nice to sing again! Thanks you to the team at #BigNightofMusicals for including me in this number.”

@dylan wrote: “When a performer can sing a song you’ve heard a million times before and make it sound like it’s the first time you’ve ever heard it, that’s a special performer. Stunning #BigNightOfMusicals.”

@behindthecurtain quizzed: “Bloody brilliant stuff. You can’t beat the joy of musicals. Same time next week?”
