BOSTON — Anthony Rizzo appeared to avoid any contact to his head, but he left Sunday night’s game early after another collision at first base.
The Yankees first baseman was hustling down the line in the seventh inning when he ran into Red Sox reliever Brennan Bernardino, who dropped the flip from first baseman Dominic Smith in the process.
The two made hip-to-hip contact, but Rizzo then took a tumble and appeared to jam and/or land on his right wrist on the ground.
Manager Aaron Boone and trainers quickly tended to Rizzo, who eventually got to his feet but was taken out of the game and pinch-run for by Oswaldo Cabrera.
The Yankees did not immediately announce the reason for Rizzo’s departure, but he appeared to be favoring his right hand/wrist.
Last year, Rizzo was playing first base when he collided with Fernando Tatis Jr. on a pickoff throw, but in that scenario Rizzo’s head and neck took the brunt of the force from Tatis’ leg.
On Sunday, Rizzo reaching first base safely loaded the bases with no outs in a game they were trailing 4-3, but they were unable to take advantage, with the next three batters going down in order.
